7th GRADE
The year will start out with us going over expectations of behavior and our use of Google Classroom for most of our classroom assignments. We'll practice the necessary skills to be successful. We'll also explore some of the technological skills needed this year and take notes in an online journal, using Google Slides that students may refer back to.
Students will be given options as we begin our year together. I will read their first novel to the class aloud and we will have daily discussions. We worked with Because of Mr. Terupt first. We started out the year focusing on fluency and expression. All work for each book gets posted onto our Google Classroom as we begin working with it. Assigned groups read at their won pace, though due dates are posted.
Once we get into the flow, students will be grouped. We will work with a few books at a time. All work will be posted to Google Classroom. When students are ready for the test, they let me know and with a few keystrokes, it appears on their screen, as I assign it to them through (again!) Google Classroom.
We do collaborative group work on novels together - meaning everyone is grouped and works together, reading aloud each day, discussing questions posed, and creating the type of shared document (or slide, or Padlet board) where they enter their answers.
There will be no negative consequence for late work, but students' names will be posted on the board to remind them to get work in. After a week, students will be required to contact their parents to explain why the work wasn't completed. But if students should finish this book AHEAD of schedule and before other groups complete their work, I ask that they read a book of their choice or jump into another group and assist them. It IS reading class, after all.
